Education all over India has become a big business and brand names have got associated with it. The original value system in the education is reducing day-by-day and commercialisation of education is happening everywhere. Chandigarh Schools are not different. In fact, there are Schools which are making the basic right of education of a child unaffordable. The Administration has the required powers to take actions against such Schools, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. The Schools also have the mandate to form a parents association and consult them before making any changes to the fee structure but that’s only on paper and not a reality. Parents have sent more than 100 complaints about specific instances in the School related to money matters. The Education Department has investigated but no visible action on these Schools. The private Schools are making a large commission on selling of uniforms, school bags, books, and other stationary items. They make it compulsory for parents to buy these things from their selected vendors who offer them a very good commission. These are the issues which are not getting resolved with a handful of parents. There is a strong need of parents coming together and fight collectively against the loot. There is also a constant need to follow-up with the UT Education Department on these issues and make them take the required actions. We also need to go to court for the specific matter in particular schools. Chandigarh Parents Association is a not for profit and voluntary organisation to work against these odds in the educational system. We may not be able to change the system all over India or all over the World, but let’s try to challenge the malpractices going on in private schools in Chandigarh and try to resolve them.
